Comber & District Manunited Banner

The Comber & District Branch were proud to have have United legend 'NORMAN WHITESIDE' as their 'President'.

[Big] Norman made his United debut on 24th April 1982 against Brighton in an away league game.

This was just two weeks before his 17th birthday. Norman Whiteside went from being a boy to a man overnight. He was the youngest player since Duncan Edwards to command a first team place, the youngest player to appear in the World Cup finals, playing for Northern Ireland, the youngest player to score in an FA Cup final when United beat Brighton the 1983 FA Cup final replay.

He loved playing for both his country and club and was loved by United's world wide fans.

In 1985 United played Everton in yet another FA Cup final. After 90 minutes the score was 0-0; but United had been reduced to 10 men. Then in extra time Norman scored one of the greatest Cup Final goals of all time to win the Cup for United.

Norman remained a great favourite at Old Trafford over the next few seasons. Then during the 1988 season he was hit by a number of injuries which resulted in a dip in form. Manager Alex Ferguson was in the process of building a team for the 90's and took the decision to let Norman go on a £600,000 transfer to Everton. After just 2 seasons with Everton he was forced, at the young age of 27, to retire from soccer.

Norman however will always be remembered as one of Manchester United's all-time hero's. He was a gifted player and will always remain in the hearts of United supporters the world over.
